Te Matau a Māui Proud
Rich in Māori culture, Te Matau a Māui (Hawke's Bay) was home to Māori settlements during the 1850's as the Europeans began to arrive along the coastline. Coastal and inland settlements clustered around areas now known as Napier and Hastings, in the Kaweka ranges and along what are now State Highway 2 and 5.
Today significant sites have been well preserved and cared for to ensure the stories of our ancestors continue to be retold for years to come.
