The homestead, built in 1890 by Phyllida's great grandfather ASG Carlyon, sits among an internationally renown 9-hectare woodland garden, the original planting dating from 1860. We have three Bed and Breakfast rooms; our main room the Swinhoe suite with a king bed and ensuite, the Cedar room with a queen bed and Huddy's room with two single beds. The Cedar room and Huddy's room share a bathroom. We are also a function venue and can cater for 50 seated in our hall and provide a unique marquee venue for weddings. We offer guided house and garden tours with our functions. The homestead is category 1 listed with Heritage NZ and the garden is listed as a Garden of National Significance by the NZ Gardens Trust. The best way to contact us is via email. The garden is open by arrangement only.
Meet your hosts
Phyllida and Stuart Gibson look forward to sharing their family home with you. Phyllida is the 5th generation to live at Gwavas and it has been a wonderful journey bringing the Garden Homestead back to life moving in in 2008 after the house had been empty for 45 years!
