The Hawke's Bay Trails are widely regarded as among the most easy-riding of the Great Rides, which means almost all of the network could be considered family-friendly.
Napier's iconic Marine Parade really is the ultimate cycling destination for kids. Featuring a junior bike track, pump track, skate park, heated pools, aquarium, playgrounds, fountains, over-water viewing platform, gardens, basketball courts, ice cream shops, and wide, flat concrete paths, the hardest part will be keeping them on the bikes!
Park up at the northern end of Marine Parade, before setting out for the seaside village of Ahuriri. You'll take in the hive of activity at Napier Port, before arriving at a popular sheltered swimming spot called Port Sandy Beach. Whether you break there, or continue along to Ahuriri Beach, both are considered to be safe swimming spots for supervised children. Ahuriri is home to a large playground, countless cafes, and - most importantly - excellent ice cream shops. Continue around to West Quay for more dining, wharf fishing, and fun riding around this picturesque fishing village.
Determine your starting point - somewhere in Haumoana or the start of the limestone trail where Beach Road curves up to the ocean - and head for Clifton. It super-easy riding, with plenty of opportunities to stop and play on the beach. Before long, you'll arrive at the excellent Hygge at Clifton Bay cafe, which caters to kids exceptionally well - both on the menu, and with space to run around. Once they're fueled up, make the return journey, stopping at the Four Square for a celebratory ice block.
At 18km, this is a slightly longer effort for the littlest of legs, but there's the added benefit of food and fun at the halfway point. Set out from Taradale and follow the stopbank trail on the eastern side of the Tutaekuri River all the way to The Puketapu - a legendary lunch spot, and the halfway mark for your journey. A slight detour will take you to the excellent Puketapu Park (complete with flying fox!). Return via the same trail to complete the journey.
